Blenheim
Estate, the City of
Fairfax
The
Blenheim Estate is located in the heart of the City of
Fairfax
on
Old Lee Highway
.
It sits on the remaining 12 acres of land that was once a 200-acre farm
owned by Albert Willcoxon in 1854. The
property has been in the Willcoxon family for five generations ending with
Barbara Scott. Upon her death in
1986, the property passed to her husband who subsequently willed it to his
brother in 1997.
In
January 1999, the City of
Fairfax
acquired the
historic site for preservation and for use as an historic park.
The house is a circa 1856-1860 brick, Federal and Greek revival home
and the grounds contain a boxwood garden, the family cemetery, and vintage
shrubs and trees.
The
most distinctive feature of the house is the dozens of surviving inscriptions
of Civil War soldiers from the Union Army who - through family and local
history - are said to have occupied the house during the war using it as a
hospital and possibly as regimental headquarters.
The names and other inscriptions have been transcribed and preliminary
research of their lives has been completed and documented.
The
City of
Fairfax
began offering the
site for events in 2001. The
first such event was the wedding reception in September, 2001.
