Pre-Marital Agreements
- Pre-Marital Agreements are appropriate primarily for disparities in income, assets or debt, and in
situations where there are children of a previous relationship.
- I estimate one hour of my time to prepare a standard Pre-Marital Agreement -- assuming all terms are agreed
in advance.
- These agreements are usually a good idea. They make a clear statement about your situation before the
marriage. They are recognized in the part of the Virginia Code called the "Premarital Agreement Act". 20 VA Code
§§ 147-155.
- E-mail me a list of what you each have (and owe), what you each earn, addresses, dates of birth, wedding
date, and any special provisions.
- I will then confirm a proposed flat fee in a written contract for legal services that you should sign and
return with your check.
- Preparation of a Pre-Marital Agreement usually requires about two business days.
