The U.S. Supreme Court decided by a 5-to-4 majority today that individuals who are not mentally ill must have a right to own some guns in some places like their homes — under the Second Amendment. The District’s controversial handgun ban was unconstitutional because it flatly prohibited individuals from owning guns for any purpose including self-defense of their dwelling.

 

I predicted this result in my blog posting of January 23, 2008.

 

Licensing, and reasonable restrictions like prohibiting guns in schools, churches and government buildings are still okay.  Expect the gun license to become another source of revenue for DC Government, like the driver’s license.
